Abstract

Translation of abstract (English)

The aim of this thesis was a first complete examination of all serdabs within the private tombs of the Old Kingdom. A standard-serdab is defined as a rectangle or square statue-chamber, above or underground within a tomb, who was ment to contain at least one statue of the tomb-owner. In total there were serdabs within nearly 600 Old Kingdom Tombs from the 1st Dynasty until the 1st Intermediate Period analysed, according to their architecture, their contents, their functionality and the rank of the tomb-owner within the ancient egyptian society was also considered. As one of the results of this thesis there can be lots of current opinions within the Egyyptology disproved concerning the architecture, the contents and the location of serdabs within tombs. The final result of this examination of all serdabs is that from their functionality they were like burial-chamber for the ka-statue of the tomb-owner, similar to the burials of ka-statues within the south-tombs or the cultic pyramids in the royal tomb areas. There are no explicit indications that the burial of a ka-statue was a necessary element of the private tomb-cult. It seemed to be within descretion of the respective tomb-owner if and how he integrated this architectural feature within his tomb. Serdabs are an independent development within the private tombs and have to be distinguished formally from the statue-burials within royal tombs. They are only comparable in their functionality.
