The Royal Tomb of El-Amarna

MARTIN, Geoffrey Thorndike, The Royal Tomb at El-'Amarna. The Rock Tombs of El-'Amarna, Part VII. I. The Objects, London, Egypt Exploration Society, 1974 (24.8 x 31.1 cm; XX + 123 p., 2 plans, 7 fig., 63 pl. [2 folding] containing a map, 4 plans, drawings and numerous ill.) = Archaeological Survey of Egypt. Edited by T. G. H. James, Thirty-Fifth Memoir.

The volume continues the edition of the Rock Tombs of El Amarna by N. de G. Davies, the sixth volume of which has appeared in 1908, BA 6308. The present volume discusses the objects found in the royal tomb; publication of its reliefs is intended to follow. After an introduction describing the site of the tomb the author first discusses earlier publications and unpublished material, particularly the mss. of Pendlebury which he was able to consult. He then deals with the date of the discovery, and the expeditions of Bouriant, Pendlebury (1931-32 and 1935) and the Service des Antiquités, as well as illegal digs. A very brief description of the tomb follows. The main part of the volume consists of the catalogue of the objects, all together 483 numbers, which are certainly or in some instances possibly found in the tomb. They are: the two sarcophagi of Akhnaton and Meketaton with their lids, broken into numerous small fragments; the canopic chests; some human remains; 215 shawabtis (preceded by a general discussion), of 11 of which the present whereabouts are unknown; ostraca, jar inscriptions and sealings; jewellery and scarabs; objects in faience, in alabaster, in limestone (among which a square stela) and other stones; metal objects; wood and other organic materials; gypsum plaster reliefs; and some miscellaneous fragments. Each object is carefully described, with measures, museum numbers, etc. added. Inscriptions are reproduced, some small objects are represented in drawings. Summary and conclusions on p. 104-106, stating, i.a., that all objects in the tomb were systematically broken up into small fragments, and that both Meketaton and Akhnaton have been buried in this tomb. There follow concordances of the catalogue numbers and museum numbers (p. 107-110), as well as the numbers of Newberry's Funerary Statuettes and Sarcophagi (Cat. gén., BA 14754) and those assigned by Pendlebury to his finds in the Royal Wâdi. Bibliography on p. 114-118, indexes 119-123. The plates contain i.a. 4 sketch-plans of the wâdi and the tomb by J. H. S. Waddington, reconstruction drawings of the sarcophagus of Akhnaton, and photographs of many of the more important objects. Rev. BiOr 32 (1975), 362-364 (William H. Peck); CdE LI, No. 101 (1976), 112-114 (Pierre Gilbert); JARCE 12 (1975), 115-116 (Earl L. Ertman).

Auch der angekündigte Band zu den Reliefs ist inzwischen erschienen:

MARTIN, Geoffrey Thorndike, The Royal Tomb at el-'Amarna. II: The Reliefs, Inscriptions, and Architecture. With Plan and Sections by Mark Lehner, London, Egypt Exploration Society, 1989 = The Rock Tombs of el-'Amarna, 7 = Archaeological Survey of Egypt Memoir, 39. (25 x 32 cm; XXII, 71 p., plans, fig., pl. incl. folding). ISBN 0-85698-107-9

Sequel to AEB 74.0477. In the preface the author refers to the discovery of ancient trackways and constructions in the Royal Wadi discovered during the daily walk to work. After presenting the sources for inscriptions and scenes used in the present work, the author relates in the introduction the history of the depredations in the tomb, ancient and modern. A note on the analysis of the plaster is added. The plan of the Royal Tomb, sharply differing from previous N.K. royal tombs, was drawn by Mark Lehner, who also presented a survey architectonic description of the tomb and an extensive scheme of dimensions. The main part of the book is occupied by the author's detailed description of the interior of the tomb, arranged by the order of the itinerary. Bibliographies referring to previous publications of each room head the sections. Whenever possible, the inscription fragments are translated. Reconstructed scenes are given. Next follow additions to the bibliographies of objects published in AEB 74.0477, and addenda et corrigenda to it. Since the publication of that volume a number of objects from the Royal Tomb, mostly shabtis, have come to the author's attention. These are dealt with in the supplement of objects. After the concordance of museum and object catalogue nos. Pamela J. Rose and Gillian M. Vogelsang-Eastwood add appendixes respectively on the pottery and the textiles (with chart) found in the tomb. General index at the end. Rev. Archív Orientální 60 (1992), 203-204 (Bretislav Vachala); BiOr 49 (1992), 106-110 (Jean-Luc Chappaz); JEA 79 (1993), 300-302 (Rolf Krauss).

Eine deutsche Übersetzung gibt es nicht!

Viele Grüße,
