During the fourth season (Nov. 64-Apr. 65) the site was cleared up to the face of the rock. The layer of debris covering this part of the temple reached a thickness of 24 metres. Its removal resulted in the discovery of two plundered rock-tombs of the Late Period [...] As indicated by the discovery of the coffins and embalmers' material buried in the described layer after the time of the XXVIth Dynasty, and the rock-tombs in the cliff surrounding the temple and dating probably to the same period, the temple site had then been used as a cemetry. The lowest of these tombs, whose entrance opens almost behind the former sanctuary of the temple, had a kind of causeway, the walls of wwhich built of re-used blocks rose to the height of 1.5m. |
